MediaLens is the complete solution to searching in e-commerce applications
MediaLens is a form of fuzzy logic search technology, both flexible and extremely capable, which can be used in webshops, media archives and other media-intensive web applications. The MediaLens interface provides the user with accurate results without requiring knowledge or proficiency in a specific search engine vocabulary and even when enquiries are made in the vaguest of terms. This gives web applications using MediaLens an unbeatable advantage over conventional search engines.
Search engines - two sides of the coin
Search engines appear to provide users with exactly what they are looking for. Assuming, that is, that users know what they are looking for. However, at second glance, many of the results have little or nothing to do with the original enquiry. In addition, users are often overwhelmed by results and find themselves no closer to the appropriate answer to their enquiry than the proverbial needle in a haystack. MediaLens is different. By way of clever abstractions and an intelligent interface, users are offered a variety of clear suggestions which genuinely respond to the original enquiry.
Searching - but, for what?
An example:
the music market consists of millions upon millions of pieces of music - and more are added every day. Even if the user is an enthusiastic music-lover, he will only ever be able to put a name to a fraction of the musicians and music available to him. A webshop selling CDs or music to download may well have every imaginable piece of music in stock but the vast majority of its wares will simply sit there gathering dust. After all, users will never look for artists or pieces of music which they know nothing about.
Searching - but, how?
All media such as music, videos, photos, newspapers and many other products and services can be the subject of a search - and eventually found. A search engine which goes on nothing more than a literal description of a product or service will be very limited indeed. An improvement would be the option of searching according to properties morely closely associated to graphics, for example, colour, form and texture. A variety of abstract characteristics such as mood or atmosphere are far better expressed through symbols and colours than words. Inexact descriptions such as "about 20" or "greeny-blue" are of no use at all when entered into a conventional text-based search engine.
Fuzzy search is the solution
The inclusion of fuzzy concepts in search engines is as simple as it is ingenious. Fuzzy data can be vague, unclear and even contradictory. No matter what the search enquiry looks like, a fuzzy logic search engine will deliver results which genuinely make sense.
The MediaLens interface
The search interface can be adapted to suit the requirements of the specific search task involved. This guarantees that the interface becomes fully integrated into the "look and feel" of the environment to which it belongs. MediaLens can be integrated into all current available e-commerce solutions. An open interface to the database and to the web server will ensure a simple integration path.
Key facts:
- easy integration with all web servers such as Apache, Netscape and Microsoft
- connection to all current databases such as Oracle, SQL Server and Informix
- high performance
- intelligent, dynamic search algorithms
- complete solution built-and-designed-to-order and turn-key delivery
